Reading is a Gift!

Our work began in 2015, sparked by the reality of low literacy levels and the absence of accessible storybooks for Ugandan learners. As OGs, we wanted to give back to the primary schools that shaped us.

When well-wishers heard our call, they responded with beautiful storybooks. But while the children were eager to read, many of the stories were foreign—disconnected from their language, landscapes, and lived experiences. We began creating storybooks rooted in our language, culture, and imagination. And we haven’t stopped.

Our books focus on representation and relevance—two powerful ingredients for building literacy and self-confidence.Today, the urgency is greater than ever. Recent statistics show that only 3 in 10 Primary 3 pupils in Uganda can read a basic English story.

This isn’t just a gap; it’s a call to action. That’s why we are accelerating our mission by promoting reading through social media and storytelling, bookshop and library services, hosting community reading sessions and partnering with stakeholders to increase our reach. We believe that when children see themselves in stories, they don’t just learn to read — they grow to believe, imagine, and lead.
